Dear RLBMS families:
We are writing to inform you of the alarming trend we are seeing involving the use of vapes by our students. We have seen an increase in the amount of possession and use of vaping devices this past school year. While it is illegal for anyone younger than 21 to buy or have these electronic smoking devices, many students find ways to access them. Some devices are supplied with a nicotine infused liquid and others with THC, the compound in Marijuana responsible for mind-altering effects.
The concentration of nicotine delivered through vaping devices is often much higher than in cigarettes or other traditional tobacco products. Nicotine is highly addictive and frequent use of vapes during teen years can increase addictive tendencies and likelihood of using other tobacco products. The dependency that can develop also leads some people to compulsive use that distracts from daily activities. At school this can make it hard to remain focused on class assignments.
Your student may have mentioned an increase in random searches upon entering our school. We plan to continue this practice to not only curb the vaping issue but to enhance the safety and security of our students and staff.
Please take this opportunity to talk to your student about the dangers of vaping. Please see the examples of vaping devices and products below. You can also see more examples of vaping products by visiting https://tinyurl.com/bdfecxme. If we can answer any questions or help in any way, please contact the school at 570-724-2306.
